The Department of Homeland Security is pushing its REAL ID Act, the 2005 law that makes it harder for non-citizens to travel or enter buildings. The next phase begins October 1, 2020, when those who have a driver's license from a state which has been granted an extension will need a new kind of license to board a plane or enter a federal building. You have until December 31st, 2021 to get a FREE REAL ID.


Why do you need a REAL ID?

A Real ID gives you the ability to board a plane, enter federal agencies , nuclear power plants, and military bases .

Do I have to get a REAL ID?

These licenses are optional, so you don't have to update your current license for now.

How much does it cost?

Free! It's free if you're renewing now or getting a new  license, but after December 31st, 2021, it will cost you.


How can I get a REAL ID?


It's easy! Just follow these steps:

  1. Save time by uploading your documents to https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/realidupgrade/
  2. Get in line early at the DMV. Bring proof of identity and residency to your local DMV office. You'll have to take a new photo for your license.

What documents do you need to a get a REAL ID?

One document that includes your date of birth and your full name. Example, Birth  certificate, Driver's license, Passport, Certificate of Naturalization, Green Card.

 Two documents that prove your residence in the U.S . For example: Utility bill, Mortgage payment book or letter from someone who owns property you live in.

 You'll also need to provide proof of your Social Security Number , like a W-2 form or pay stub.

Your proof of residence can be any TWO documents that contain your name and physical address, for example: Utility bill , Mortgage payment book or letter from someone who owns property you live in.
